Definition

The Lunar Nodes are not physical bodies but mathematical points derived from the intersection of the Moon’s orbital path with the ecliptic plane (the Sun’s apparent path). The North Node, or ascending node, is where the Moon moves from south to north of the ecliptic, while the South Node, or descending node, is the opposite point. Together, they form an axis in the natal chart, often interpreted as a guide to one’s karmic lessons and life purpose. The North Node represents areas of growth and potential, whereas the South Node indicates comfort zones and past patterns, whether from earlier in life or, in some traditions, past lives. They are always exactly opposite each other, and their positions are calculated based on either the mean or true motion of the Moon. In predictive astrology, the transiting Lunar Nodes and their relationship to natal planets or points reveal significant life events or shifts. While the Nodes do not emit energy like planets, they carry symbolic weight, often associated with eclipses, as these occur near the Nodes. The interpretation of the Nodes varies between astrological traditions, with Western astrology focusing on personal growth and karmic themes, and Vedic astrology often emphasizing fate and external circumstances.

In a natal chart, the Lunar Nodes appear as an axis, with the North Node and South Node exactly opposite each other. Look for their glyphs: a horseshoe shape for the North Node and an inverted horseshoe for the South Node. Pay attention to their house and sign placements, which indicate areas of life and qualities tied to growth (North Node) and past tendencies (South Node). Ignore aspects between the Nodes themselves; instead, consider their aspects to planets or angles, as these highlight key dynamics.

History

The concept of Lunar Nodes originates from ancient astronomy, with early observations by Babylonian astronomers.
