An aspect where two planets are moving apart in degrees within their orbital relationship.
Definition
A separating aspect occurs when two celestial bodies, previously in exact aspect, are moving further apart in degrees. This means the faster-moving planet has already passed the exact degree of the aspect and is now separating from the slower-moving planet. Separating aspects are interpreted as representing events, dynamics, or influences that are in the process of concluding or losing intensity. In a natal chart, they often symbolize past experiences or actions already initiated. Symbolically, they can indicate situations where momentum has been established and the influence is waning. It contrasts with applying aspects, which reflect developments that are still building. Separating aspects can also highlight areas where closure or resolution may occur over time.
In a chart
In a natal chart, identify separating aspects by checking if the faster-moving planet has passed the exact degree of the aspect. For instance, if the Moon (faster) is at 15° and Mars (slower) is at 12° in a trine, the aspect is separating. Pay attention to the degree positions and planetary speeds, and disregard aspects that are no longer within relevant orbs.
Examples
- Moon at 10° Cancer separating from a sextile with Venus at 8° Taurus.
- Mars at 25° Aries separating from a square with Saturn at 23° Capricorn.
