A planet within 15° of the Sun, often considered weakened due to the Sun's overpowering light.
Definition
A planet is considered 'under the beams' when it is within 15° of the Sun in either direction. This condition implies that the planet is obscured by the Sun's overpowering light, making it less visible and symbolically less influential. In traditional astrology, this state is associated with a weakening of the planet’s ability to fully express its significations. The Sun’s intense presence overshadows the planet, potentially making its qualities more internalized or latent. However, this condition is distinct from cazimi (when a planet is within 0°17' of the Sun), where the planet is considered strengthened. Edge cases include planets near the 15° boundary or those in heliacal rising/setting phases, which can temporarily alter the effect.
In a chart
To identify a planet under the beams, measure its longitudinal distance from the Sun. If it is within 15°, it meets this condition. Ignore planets beyond 15° or those combust (within 8°30'). Consider the planet’s essential dignity and aspects to better interpret its weakened state.
Examples
- Venus at 12° Leo with the Sun at 5° Leo is under the beams.
- Mars at 28° Scorpio with the Sun at 15° Sagittarius is not under the beams.
